Junior Scientists, schools and home brewing enthusiasts, get ready to Make it Grain in the month of August for the chance to win big! In celebration of National Science Week 2021, Street Science has teamed up with food technology innovators Earlee Products to challenge you to make the heaviest batch of water kefir by the end of August. And if you’re feeling extra ambitious, you can get creative with your kefir brew to make your own unique, delicious flavour profile!
Street Science has fabulous prizes up for grabs for schools and members of the community who are keen to have a lot of fun with their fermentation. School entries will go in the running to win the grand prize of a Street Science incursion to the value of $700. For our families at home, the winning community entries will receive scintillating science hampers packed full of goodies for your junior scientist’s home lab, valued at up to $200!
Bring your kefir grains to life at the beginning of August, then challenge yourself with our tried and tested brewing process – found here – to get your kefir growing and reproducing as much as possible by the end of the month!
To enter, simply post two photos – one photo of your first kefir weighing, and then a second photo of your final kefir weighing to show the increase in weight over the month – in ONE post in either the Make it Grain Facebook event, or on the Street Science Facebook page or on Instagram by 11:59pm Tuesday 31st August, 2021. Make sure both photos show the kefir being weighed on a set of scales so that the weight is clearly visible, and calculate the increase in value over the month and include this in the post. You’ll also need to tag Street Science and include the competition hashtag #makeitgrain in your post to be eligible. Bonus points if you go one step further and include a photo of your second kefir ferment with your chosen additional flavour ingredients! See T’s and C’s below for more information.
There’s no better way to embrace the Future of Foods than by putting your home brewing skills to the test to concoct the ultimate fermented beverage. But if you’re new to fermentation and can’t tell your kefir from your kombucha, this video breaks it down for you.
Terms and Conditions
2.0 The competition is open to residents of Australia of all ages, except employees of Street Science and their close relatives and anyone otherwise connected with the organisation or judging of the competition.
3.0 There is no entry fee necessary to enter this competition.
4.0 By entering this competition, an entrant is indicating his/her agreement to be bound by these terms and conditions.
5.0 Route to entry for the competition and details of how to enter are found via the Street Science Make it Grain Facebook event, the Street Science Facebook page and the Street Science Instagram account.
6.0 Only one entry will be accepted per person. Multiple entries from the same person will be disqualified.
7.0 Opening date for competition entry is 12:00am Sunday August 1st, 2021. Closing date for entry will be 11:59pm Tuesday August 31st 2021. After this date no further entries to the competition will be permitted.
8.0 No responsibility can be accepted for entries not received for whatever reason.
9.0 The rules of the competition and how to enter are as follows:
9.1 How to Enter:
- Like and comment on the Facebook or Instagram competition announcement posts made on Wednesday July 28th, 2021
- Post two photos: one photo of your first kefir weighing, and then a second photo of your final kefir weighing to show the increase in weight over the month.
- Ensure that both photos show the kefir being weighed on a set of scales so that the weight is clearly visible. Calculate the increase in weight across the month and post this value clearly.
- Post your two photos in ONE post in either the Street Science Make it Grain Facebook event, or on the Street Science Facebook page, or on Instagram, by 11:59pm Tuesday 31st August, 2021. No entries will be accepted after this date.
- You must tag Street Science in your post – Facebook tag is @streetscienceau and Instagram tag is @streetscience_au. You must also include the competition hashtag #makeitgrain . Any competition entries without the required tags and hashtags will not be counted.
- An optional extra step that you can choose to take to make your entry stand out even more is to include photos of your second ferment kefir beverages that feature additional ingredients for a unique water kefir flavour profile. This is encouraged, but not required for competition eligibility.
9.2 Competition Rules:
- Entries are limited to one entry per person or one entry per school.
- You may not enter more times than indicated by using multiple email addresses, identities or devices in an attempt to circumvent the rules.
- Entries must provide the requested information and photo features to be eligible.
10.0 The promoter reserves the right to cancel or amend the competition and these terms and conditions without notice in the event of a catastrophe, war, civil or military disturbance, or any actual or anticipated breach of any applicable law or regulation or any other event outside of the promoter’s control. Any changes to the competition will be notified to entrants as soon as possible by the promoter.
11.0 The promoter is not responsible for inaccurate prize details supplied to any entrant by any third party connected with this competition.

Third Prize: Class set of Street Science Bouncy Ball Kits (valued at $250)
12.2 Community Prizes

Second Prize: Street Science Store Hamper valued at approx $100
Third Prize: Street Science Store Hamper valued at approx $60
The prizes are as stated and no cash or other alternatives will be offered.The prizes are not transferable. Prizes are subject to availability and we reserve the right to substitute any prize with another of equivalent value without giving notice.
13.0 Winners will be chosen by Street Science and will be announced publicly on Street Science’s Facebook and Instagram pages by Friday 3 September 2021. Winners will be selected based on the entries deemed to be the most resourceful and creative utilising the competition parameters, as well as featuring the heaviest kefir harvest.
14.0 The winner will be notified via DM on Instagram/Facebook, as well as a public announcement and response by Street Science to their competition entry post. If the winner cannot be contacted or does not claim the prize within 14 days of notification, we reserve the right to withdraw the prize from the winner and pick a replacement winner. Additionally, the winner of the Street Science School Incursion prize must book their incursion before 30th November 2021 to redeem their prize, after which the prize will be null and void.
15.0 The promoter will obtain the postal address of the prize winners and mail out their prize within 3 working days of the winner accepting their prize.
16.0 The promoter’s decision in respect of all matters to do with the competition will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
17.0 By entering this competition, an entrant is indicating his/her agreement to be bound by these terms and conditions.
18.0 The competition and these terms and conditions will be governed by Australian law and any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Australia.
19.0 The winner agrees to the use of his/her name and image in any publicity material, as well as their entry. Any personal data relating to the winner or any other entrants will be used solely in accordance with current Australian data protection legislation and will not be disclosed to a third party without the entrant’s prior consent.
20.0 Entry into the competition will be deemed as acceptance of these terms and conditions.
